Tech Specs: The Rainy Day Guide


A quick-reference guide to the components and metrics that shape your tone.

Pickup Metrics

  • DC Resistance (DCR): Measured in Ohms (Ω). While often used to gauge output, it measures the resistance of the wire. Generally, higher DCR indicates a "hotter" pickup with more midrange; lower DCR yields a brighter, vintage tone.

  • Inductance: Measured in Henrys (H). This is the best indicator of "meat" and output. High inductance means more power and less treble; low inductance means a clearer, more chime-like response.

  • Resonant Peak: Measured in Kilohertz (kHz). The frequency where the pickup is most active. A higher peak results in a brighter sound, while a lower peak sounds warmer and more compressed.

The Wire: Gauge & Composition

  • 42 AWG: The vintage industry standard. Provides a clear, open, and balanced frequency response.

  • 43 AWG: Slightly thinner wire allowing for more winds. Used to add body and midrange punch—common in bridge pickups where you want more authority.

  • 44 AWG: Ultra-fine specialty wire used for high-output humbucker builds. Allows for maximum windings, resulting in high output and rich, singing harmonics.

  • Insulation: The coating (Plain Enamel vs. Formvar) affects "stray capacitance," subtly shifting the sweetness and clarity of the high-end.

Alnico Magnets: The Core Personality

  • Alnico 2 (A2): Soft, musical, and "squishy." Great for smoothing out a bright bridge position with excellent sustain.

  • Alnico 3 (A3): The lowest magnetic pull. Very clear and woody; excellent for neck pickups where you want zero muddiness.

  • Alnico 5 (A5): Bold, punchy, and aggressive. Features the strongest "snap" and the tightest low end.

Baseplates & Tone Shaping

  • Copper/Brass: Adds inductance, warming up the tone and increasing "punch."

  • Stainless Steel: Provides a cleaner, more hi-fi response with less coloring of the magnetic field.

  • Ferrous Metal (Voodoo Set): Increases the magnetic footprint for a more aggressive, raw, and powerful output.

Potentiometers & Capacitors

  • 250k vs. 500k Pots: 250k pots bleed some high-end (ideal for single coils); 500k pots let more treble through (ideal for humbuckers).

  • CTS & Centralab vs. Bourns: CTS offers a firm, vintage feel with more resistance. Bourns are low-friction and free-turning—perfect for fast volume swells.

  • Tone Caps: .022µF is the modern standard for a usable treble roll-off; .047µF is the vintage choice for darker, jazzier tones.

Advanced Options

  • RWRP (Reverse Wind, Reverse Polarity): Cancels hum in "in-between" positions (like positions 2 and 4 on a Strat), delivering that classic noise-free "quack."

  • Treble Bleed: Prevents the loss of high-end clarity when you roll your volume knob down. We offer Standard or Kinman-style circuits for a more natural taper.
